William L. Sternbergh
SPRINGFIELD – William L. Sternbergh Jr., 76, of Springfield died at 2:55 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at his residence.
He was born March 12, 1934, in St. Louis, MO, the son of William H. & Garnent E. Smith Sternbergh. He married Donna J. Hollinshead on March 12, 1955.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Sternbergh of Springfield; 2 sons, William Lee (Debra) Sternbergh of Jonesboro, ME and Wayne Leonard (Deyon) Sternbergh of Heyworth, IL; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
William was a resident of Springfield most of his life. He worked for CILCO in the gas service department and retired in 1993.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church, Blue Ridge Club, VFW Post 4763, Members Choice Credit Union Board, Clear Lake Grasshoppers, Elks Club and Riverton Fire District Board. He also helped coach Little League and Khoury League for many years.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Elliott Avenue Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Elliott Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. Roger Jackson officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the Navy will conduct military honors.
