William H. Wiest Sr.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – William Henry Wiest Sr., 84, of Gainesville died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Edwardsville, the son of Carl and Lillian Rae Wiest. He married Lucille Callarman.
Mr. Wiest served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Nov. 13, 1942 to Sept. 21, 1945, and was honorably discharged. He served as commander of Disabled American Veterans chapter 90 for nine years. He served on the Alachua County Veterans advisory committee for many years and on the Board of Directors of Vetspace, a large veterans’ homeless shelter, until his death. He served several terms as national deputy chief of staff and aide to the national DAV commander. He was shot down over Germany and was a prisoner of war. He was a recipient of the POW Medal, Purple Heart, Air Medal and many other military decorations.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Wiest of Gainesville; daughter, Cheryl Wiest; and son, William H. Wiest Jr.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, in Oak Ridge Cemetery, where the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors. Vaughn Beeman will officiate.
