William H. Smith
William Harold “Bill” Smith, 88, of Springfield, died at 4:10 pm, Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Memorial Medical Center. He was born, November 17, 1927 in Paynesville, MO, to “A.E.” and Annie Armstrong Smith. He married Betty R. Davis on November 1, 1947 and she preceded him in death on January 12, 2015.
Survivors include his two children, Sharon (Van) Johnson and Hal (Meg) Smith both of Springfield; three grandchildren, Carla (Dan) Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Smith (fiancé, Nick Lucin), David (Becky) Reid; four great grandchildren, Ryan William, Connor, Kyle and Anna Fitzgerald; brother in law and sister in law, Jim and Marge Davis and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-seven years; two sisters, Katherine Owens and Ruth Hemmer and two brothers, A.D. Smith and Vernon Smith.
Bill was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He was a US Army veteran; a long time member of the DAV; a member of the Sunset Club and was a dedicated lifelong Cardinal Fan. Bill was a loving father and grandfather and his greatest joy was being surrounded by his entire family.
Bill was a retired Postal Clerk serving the US Postal Service for thirty-seven years.
Visitation: 10 am – 11:45 am, Monday, April 18, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Funeral Mass: 12 pm, Monday, April 18, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church, with Reverend Seth Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conducted.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Dominican Sisters of Springfield for their ministries and promoting their mission.
