William "Gene" Heflin
William “Gene” Heflin, 69, of Springfield, died at 11:26 pm, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born March 16, 1947 in Kewanee, IL to William A. and Genevieve (Bergeron) Heflin. He married Sharon Senase August 2, 1986 in Nashville, TN and she survives.
Also surviving are one sister, Karen Verchio of Kankakee, IL; one brother, Scott (Laurie) Heflin of Kansas City, MO; four nieces, Melissa Athanasopulos, Jennifer Tarulis, Trisha Kohan, and Hillary Heflin; two great nieces, Caroline Tarulis and Sophie Kohan; and two great nephews, George Tarulis IV and Theodore Kohan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gene graduated from Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee in June of 1965. He attended the University of Denver and later the University of Wyoming. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration (BSBA) from Illinois State University in June of 1971. In August of 1989, Gene earned his master of business administration (MBA) from Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
He served in the United States Air Force from July of 1967 until November of 1970 and was a Staff Sergeant airborne radio operator on EC-121s.
Gene and his wife, Sharon had the pleasure of living in eight different cities, both domestic and abroad through Gene’s lengthy career with Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide (The Jack Daniel Distillery) as a sales manager and trainer from which he retired in 2002.
He was an avid model railroad enthusiast and a member of the “Once a Month Model Railroad Club.”
Memorial Gathering: 10 am – 12 pm, Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.
Memorial Service: 12 pm, Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with Reverend Braden Maher officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
