William E. Horner
SPRINGFIELD – William E. Horner Jr., 82, of Springfield, IL died Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Oak Terrace Nursing Home.
He was born June 14, 1928, in Springfield, IL, the son of Allen and Carmela Horner; they preceded him in death.
He is survived by four daughters and three sons, Tony (Michelle Sharp) Horner of Sherman, Allen (wife, Rita) of Tennessee, Phyllis of Honolulu, Hawaii, Gene (wife, Joselle) of California, Tina of Texas, Becky of California and Diane (husband, John) of Chicago; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Josephine (husband, Willie); two brothers, Tommy (wife, Marsha) and Sammy, all of Chicago; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Horner was a member of St. Agnes Church, former member of Eagles Aerie 437 and 4361, and the AmVets. He was a member of the Merchant Marines serving during WWII on the Dominican Victory, United States Victory and MacMurray Victory, he also served during the Korean conflict in the Air Force as an air policeman. He loved fishing, drinking beer, watching the Cubs and Bears, spending time at Patrick’s farm, and his cat Bandit.
A resident of Springfield most of his life, formerly of Chicago, he retired from the Secretary of State Power Plant, as a stationary engineer.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home, with Monsignor Carl Kemme officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
