William Carl Meyer, 97 of Springfield died at 12:48 pm, Sunday, September 8, 2019 at his home. He was born February 24, 1922 in Springfield to Carl A. and Marie Eaton Meyer. He married Betty Jean Iliff on December 28, 1946 and she preceded him in death on February 19, 2002.

Survivors include one son Steven W. Meyer of Springfield; one niece, Kim Meyer of New Orleans, LA; one great nephew, Corey Milan of San Diego, CA and one sister-in-law, Adele Meyer of New Orleans, LA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one sister, Virginia Meyer and one brother, Richard Meyer.

William was a graduate of Springfield High School. He worked for the Illinois Department of Public Health for 32 years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Mr. Meyer was a US Coast Guard veteran of WWII. He served aboard the USS 349, LCI(L) for the D. Day Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, and later in the Pacific aboard LCI(L) 356. He was a charter member of the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Graveside Service: 2 pm, Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating. Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the United States Coast Guard will conduct military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
