William “Bill” M. Nickell, 63 of Thayer, died at 6:15 am, Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 26, 1958 in Rock Island, IL, to William M. and Gladys F. Garst Nickell. He married Diane Grigg on September 23, 1978, and she survives.

Also surviving are six sisters, Jane Castro, Dena Nickell, Vickie Hoskins, Sue (jack) Larsen, Kim (Fred) Herr and Kathy (Michele) Ausmus; one brother, Steve (Juleen) Fellows; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gerald and Evelyn Grigg; brother-in-law, Jim (Debbie) Grigg of Auburn; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and his Boston Terriers, Cheyenn and Alabama.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Harry W. Ausmus and two sisters, Beth Havener and Marlene Baker.

Bill attended Springfield School and began working at Eisner Foods at the age of 14, working his way up to store manager with Jewel, retiring after 35 years. He then worked in the warehouse of the Central Illinois Food Bank for 11 years at was employed at Black and Co., in Springfield.

He was a NASCAR; Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs Fan. He loved fast powerful cars; his family and his Bostees.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Burial will be at a later date.
