Walter J. Oehlert
SPRINGFIELD – Walter J. Oehlert, 97, of Springfield died at 2:25 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born March 20, 1911, in Chicago, the son of Ollie and Frances Kumm Miller. He was married for 71 years to Dorothy O. Welch; they were married on June 20, 1937.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, George Oehlert.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy O. Oehlert of Springfield; a son, Allen (wife, Sara) Oehlert of Chatham; four grandchildren, Matthew (wife, Amie) Oehlert, Elizabeth (husband, Vladimir) Avila, Emily (husband, Aaron) Dufrene and Katherine (husband, Phillip) Galloway; and a great-granddaughter, Marcelina Oehlert.
Walter was a resident of Springfield for about 20 years. He worked for Western Electric in Chicago for 40 years as a tool and die maker.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a Western Electric retirees group called the Pioneers. He was an avid photographer, loved traveling and genealogy and was a Voracious reader.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. The body will lie in state from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church, 714 E. Capitol, Springfield, IL 62701. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Thomas Christell and the Rev. Juli Lejman-Guy officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
