Vernon L. Schafer
SPRINGFIELD – Vernon Bud L. Schafer, 85, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Villa Healthcare East.
He was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Springfield, the son of John W. and Alma V. Lochman Schafer. He married Mary Marguerite Kienzler in 1950; she preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 1990. His parents; grandchild, Lindsay Schafer; and brother, Arthur G. Schafer, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Schafer was employed with Schafer Gainer Mills and Hatchery from 1948 to 1972 and with Ace Hardware from 1972 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, where he was a lay minister for many years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a carrier pilot with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1947.
Surviving are his 14 children, Laurie (husband, Steve) Mann, Kurt (wife, Kathy) Schafer, Kris (wife, Diana) Schafer, Karen (husband, Rich) Higdon, Dan (wife, Debbie) Schafer, Mary Beth Ross, Jack Schafer, Sue (husband, Kurt) Windisch and Steve Schafer, all of Springfield, Kevin (wife, Michelle) Schafer of Williamsville, Jane Edwards of Chatham, David (wife, Liz) Schafer of Lincoln, Tom Schafer of Nashville, Tenn., and Sally Lyons of Boulder, Colo.; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Walsh of Chicago and Sue Wall of Springfield; brother, James (wife, Beverly) Schafer of Venetia, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home, with prayers at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. David Hoefler officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
