Thomas M. Armstead
SPRINGFIELD – Thomas M. Armstead, 96 of Springfield, died at 2:47 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Home.
He was born on August 26, 1912, in New Berlin to Frederick and Margaret Delaney Armstead. He was first married to Zella German for 34 years, she preceded him in death on February 11, 1971. He then married Mary Rose Morgan. They were married for 33 years and she preceded him in death on June 10, 2007. He is also preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Donna Fischer, and is the last of 11 siblings.
Thomas is survived by one son, Thomas L. (wife, Janet) Armstead of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Firefighters Local #37, the Springfield Association of Retired Firefighters, Firefighters/Postal Lake Club and was an official member of the Die Hard Cubs Fan Club.
Mr. Armstead retired in 1974 after 32 years of service from the City of Springfield Fire Department as a Captain.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 5-7 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 5 pm. The Springfield Fire Department will post an Honor Guard during visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church with the Reverend Mark Schulte officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
