Thomas L. Armstead, 77, of Springfield, died at 12:41 am, Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born September 19, 1936 in Springfield, to Thomas M. and Zella Germann Armstead. He married Janet F. Casey on March 21, 1954 and she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Barb (Tim) Call of Springfield, Linda (John) Kulek of Springfield and Karrie (Brad) Long of Rochester; two sons, Mike (Therese) Armstead of Rochester, MN and John Armstead of Springfield; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and three nieces.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Fischer.

He attended Lincoln Land Community College and graduated from the National Fire Academy. He was a member of Fire Fighters Local 37; Springfield Association of Retired Firefighters; Associated Firefighters of Illinois Eagle Aerie #437; Knights of Columbus #364, where he was a 4th degree Knight and trustee; St. Joseph’s Home Board of Directors and volunteered at St. Joseph’s Home for many years. He was a member of Christ the King Church. His greatest hobby was spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time in Florida.

Thomas retired as Chief of the Springfield Fire Department after 28 years of service. He served as Illinois State Fire Marshall for ten years, retiring in 2001.

Visitation: 3-7 pm, Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home where an Honor Guard will be posted by the Springfield Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral Mass: 10 am, Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Christ the King Church with Monsignor David Lantz, Reverend Philip Kraft and Deacon Al Laabs concelebrating.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph’s Home or the American Cancer Society.
