Theresa F. Kern, 89, of Springfield passed away at 11:58 am, Sunday, August 28, 2016 at St. John’s Hospital. She was born June 5, 1927 in Springfield, the daughter of Carl and Catherine (Schilling) Burg. She married Earl Kern, June 14, 1952 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He preceded her in death August 29, 1998. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Iocca and several brothers-n-law and sisters-in-law.

She attended grade school at SS Peter and Paul, graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1948 as Valedictorian of her class, and attended Springfield Junior College.

Theresa retired from Grieme Brothers Inc. Farm Supply after 54 years as Secretary and Bookkeeper, where her organizational skills and attention to detail was unsurpassed. She was totally dedicated and was an ardent activist in school and church activities. She was an active member of Griffin High School Band Parents Club.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Ladies Guild of the Parish. She served as School Board Secretary, Cub Scout Den Mother, Parish Council Secretary, Eucharistic Minister (23 years), Funeral Ministry Chairman, Mass Coordinator and Prayer Chain Group, Volunteer for Meals on Wheels, was a member of St. Louise DeMariliac Guild, and Eucharistic Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital for 7 years.

Theresa was an active member of the Ursuline Alumni Association, served as treasurer and chaired many Ursuline Garden Parties. She was a member of Springfield College Alumni Association and served many years as treasurer of SCI
Music Guild. She was nominated for the Ageless Hero Award by Blue Cross Blue Shield in recognition of achievements and for the inspiration she gave to those she knew.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and attending their sporting events. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, arts/crafts, and family get togethers,
especially hosting her family’s annual Christmas dinner.

She is survived by one daughter: Sandra (Robert) Zook of Athens; four sons: John (Tina) Kern of Springfield, Ronald (Ruthann) Kern of Leaf River, IL, E. Edward (Jill) Kern of Sherman, and Danny Kern of Springfield; five grandchildren: Catherine, Rebecca, William, Zachary, and Noah Kern; one brother: Carl (Rosemarie) Burg; two sisters: Dorothy Iocca, and Barbara Lehman; two brothers-in-law: Joe (JoAnn) Kern, and James Iocca; sister-in-law Mary Kern; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4-7 pm, Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S. 5th St., Springfield with a prayer service at 4 pm.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Friday, September 2, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield, with Reverend Steven Janoski, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
