Robert R. Smith

Robert R. Smith, 91, died peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 4:35 am, at Bickford Senior Care surrounded by family. He was born to Roy A. Smith and Ethel K. Melcher, and they preceded him in death. He married Mary Margaret Jenot on October 18, 1947, and she preceded him in death on June 15, 2014.

Surviving are three daughters: Sandra (John) Tamblin of Springfield, Deborah (David) Frank of Chattanooga, TN, and Gail (David) Clodfelter of Springfield; two sons: Dr. Kevin (Patricia) Smith of Winfield, IL and Curtis (Connie) Smith of Springfield, eleven grandchildren: DeAnna Clark, Tabatha Szkutnik, Adam Goone, Danett Moseley, Dalana Robertson, Shane Streder, Konnor Clodfelter, Justin Smith, Lauren Smith, Courtney Smith and Corey Smith, eleven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert was a lifelong resident of Springfield, graduating from Lanphier High School. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during WWII. He was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service for 39 years and for the State Lottery for 5 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and the National Association of Letter Carriers, and a Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 9:30 am, Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Church with Reverend Manuel Cuizon officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Military honors will be conducted.
