Robert M. Davies, 75, of Riverton, IL, died at 7:50 pm, April 3, 2014 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born June 4, 1938, in Pittsburgh, PA to William E. and Elizabeth Morgan Davies. He married Cynthia J. Holt on July 25, 1964, in Quincy, IL and she survives. This year would have marked the couple’s fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Bob is also survived by his sister, Sue Davies-Yoggerst (Bill “Yogi” Yoggerst) .

His parents and one brother, David Davies, preceded him in death.

Mr. Davies graduated in 1956 from Stockton High School, Stockton, IL, then attended Purdue University. He proudly served in the United States Army from February 1957 through November 1958. After completing his military service, he attended Western Illinois University and received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Math. He continued his education in Accounting at the University of Illinois.

Bob was a member of the Union Lodge of Riverton, Lavely Lodge in Riverton, Ansar Shrine and Springfield Consistory. He also sat on the State Board of the National Association of Tax Preparers for five years. Bob was also a life member of Sertoma International was a charter member of Springfield Breakfast Sertoma Club and was a former gold coat president, an achievement earned by building several additional Sertoma Clubs in the surrounding area. While in Breakfast Club, he had the privilege of working with former Governor Dan Walker to have permission to manage the first Bingo operation held at the Illinois State Fair. He was a former member of the Riverton Lions Club and has been a member of Springfield Motor Boat Club since 1971, where he once served as its treasurer.
One of Bob’s proudest achievements was his involvement with the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight, the group which flies WWII, Korean and Viet Nam era veterans to Washington DC to see their various monuments. This trip is free of cost to eligible veterans. He currently served as treasurer of Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
Bob worked for Sangamo Electric for three years and then joined TED’s Accounting Service in Riverton and Petersburg where he worked for forty years, retiring at the end of the year 2012.

Memorial Gathering: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home with a Masonic Service at 6:45 p.m.

Celebration of Life: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home. Inurnment of remains will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the United States Army. The procession will be accompanied by the Illinois Patriot Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight, Riverton Rescue Squad or American Legion Post 32 Legion Riders project to install replacement flag poles at Camp Butler.
