Robert L. Martin
Robert L. Martin, 79, of Springfield, IL died at 5:45 p.m., Monday, August 3, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born April 29, 1936 in Springfield, IL to Lester and Mary Quinn Martin and they preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death is one sister, Beverly Geiser. He married Ann Pettit in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Ann; 5 children, Mark (Patti) Martin, Kevin (Jennifer) Martin, Michelle (Rick) Jasmon, Greg (Nicole Florence) Martin and Kelly (Matt) DeSalle all of Springfield; 3 stepdaughters, Natalie (Brett) Pippin of Athens, Michelle (Mark) Wethington of Oakford and Chris (Mark) Riedle of Cantrall; 21 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mary Fran Clark of Biloxi, MS; 1 brother, David Martin of Springfield; 1 uncle, Wayne L. Martin of Champaign, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert was a lifelong resident of Springfield where he attended Blessed Sacrament Church. He was a graduate of Cathedral Boys High School. He received his Bachelors’ degree from Western Illinois University where he was a multiple sport letter winner. He was an inductee in the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame. He made numerous wooden flowers that decorate the homes and classrooms of the families of Blessed Sacrament Parish. Robert taught Driver’s Education and coached for over 20 years at Griffin High School. He was an avid fan of SHG and Illini Football. Bob retired from the Illinois State Department of Corrections after many years of service.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 am Friday, August 7, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating.
