Robert D. Smith
SPRINGFIELD – Robert D. Smith, 85, of Springfield died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Springfield, the son of Floyd and Mabel Obrien Smith.
He married Margaret Ippoliti on April 10, 1948.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Arthur Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith of Springfield; a daughter, Therese (Rich) Vinson of Springfield; two sons, Robert E. (Kris) Smith of Springfield and Stephen Smith of Cedar Park, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas (Sandra) Wilson of East Alton and Jerry Wilson of Springfield; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert retired from CWLP, where he worked for 35 years as a meter reader.
He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran serving during World War II. He was a member of the Church of the Little Flower and K of C 364. He was an avid golfer
Visitation will be 4-7 pm, Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with prayer service at 6:45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Church of the Little Flower, with the Rev. Chuck Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct Military Honors.
