Richard A. "Dick" Wieties, Sr.

Richard A. “Dick” Wieties, Sr., 83, of Springfield, died on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at his daughter’s home surrounded by his family. He was born May 17, 1937, in Springfield, to Jefferson and Gladys Hahn Wieties. He married Wilma Anna Krimmel on June 11, 1961 and she preceded him in death December 3, 2005.

Richard was also preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Lester, Robert, Glenn, and William Wieties.

Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie (Stephan) Draughan of Springfield; two sons, Richard A. (Tammy) Wieties, Jr. of Paris, and Christopher (Marcy) Wieties of Racine, WI; four grandchildren, Casey (Micheal) Sheahan, Curtis Draughan, Michaela Wieties, and Elizabeth Wieties; two great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Ruby Sheahan; one sister, Gladys Etter of Pekin; two brothers, Donald (Myrna) Wieties of Carlinville and Jim Wieties of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard belonged to and was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was on the church council, was head usher, served as a communion assistant, and was a member of Group Loyal and the church golf group. He was an avid golfer and played in Stewart Warner John W. Hobbs Corporation Golf League. He coached Khoury League Baseball and was a chaperone of Luther League.

Richard grew up in Divernon and lived in Springfield during his adult life. He retired after forty years of service as a model maker at Stewart Warner John W. Hobbs. Richard was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1957 – 1959 and served in the Army Reserves from 1959 – 1963.

Memorial Gathering: 4 – 7 pm, Monday, February 15, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Memorial Service: 10:30 am, Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Busboom and Pastor Pam Mitcham officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

So sorry to hear about Dick's passing. As a fellow lutheran and employee at Hobbs, Dick and I talked a lot about many things - about work and about our faith. I remember our times walking to work together, playing golf, and working on projects in the model shop at work. My sincere condolenace to the Wieties family. Sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Dick was a leader at St. John's when I was growing up. When I was in high school and volunteered to be an usher, he was the teacher, organizer and supporter of all ushers. He was kind and generous. Caring and loving. St John's lost a leader. He will be missed!

So very sorry to learn of Mr. Wieties' passing. He will be remembered as a kind and generous man. I attended school with his son, Rich, and then was fortunate enough to become his & Wilma's neighbor several years later. I always enjoyed the conversations we had when the weather was pleasant & yard work was in full bloom. May God wrap his family & friends in His Loving & Caring Arms and grant them Peace & Comfort during this time of grief... Hugs To All.

To the Wieties Family, I am so very sorry to read of your Dad’s passing in the paper. Your Dad was such an inspiration to all who were blessed to have known him. I will never forget all that he did for my grandpa (Earl Rutherford) after my grandma passed away. Your Dad was always available—no matter the place or the hour, your Dad would be there for him. I am so grateful to have known your Dad—he was a friend, mentor and a staple of the church. As I sit here and reflect upon all that your Dad did through his work as a Stephen Minister, Matthew 25:23 comes to my mind and is no doubt what God spoke to him on February 10—"His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, and because of your Dad’s faith and his relationship with Him, your Dad will be a bigger part of your future than he was of your past. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

It was an Honor to have gotten to know Mr. Wieties through Tue night Hobbs golf league at Bunn park and congregating with him at St. Johns Church. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Wieties was a favorite of my husband Mark and me. He was kind, caring and always a gentleman. He served St. John’s with devotion and always was willing to step up and do his part. Even when adversity hit through cancer, he still cared more about others than himself, asking about the health and welfare of friends even while suffering himself. I will always remember the twinkle in his eye as he joked with Mark every Sunday morning! He was an example to all and will be greatly missed!!
