Rev. Dr. David MacDonna, Jr.

February 15, 1932 - December 21, 2015

Dave was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania on February 15, 1932 and passed away on December 21, 2015 in Springfield, Illinois. He was raised by Edna Bender MacDonna and David MacDonna, Sr. in Philadelphia, PA and married Carolyn Maitland, whom he met at Bloomfield College (New Jersey), on May 28, 1955 at the University of Miami, Florida.

A graduate from Haverford Township High School, (Havertown, PA), Dave attended Bloomfield College and graduated from the University of Miami in 1955. He graduated with a Master in Theology from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary and later a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Presbyterian Seminary in 1983. Dave was ordained into ministry on May 28, 1957 and served as pastor for congregations in Nabb, Indiana, Fort Branch, Indiana and Harrisburg, Illinois before serving as Executive Presbyter for Southeastern Illinois Presbytery until his retirement in 1998. He then served as interim pastor for several congregations in the central Illinois area including Bethlehem and Farmingdale Presbyterian churches. Dave was active in the Synod of Lincoln Trails where he helped to create a program for newly ordained pastors.

Dave was a member of many different organizations including the Harrisburg Masonic Lodge #325, the AASR Valley of Springfield, the Springfield Ansar Shrine Clown Unit (where he was known as Hurricane), and the Harrisburg Kiwanis Club (IL) where he served as President for many years. Dave was an active board member of Kemmerer Village and Illinois Presbyterian Home. He served on the Illinois Council of Churches, was Chaplain of Civil Air Patrol and is a Colonel of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Dave saw the incredible power of summer camps and mission work for youth – from New York City urban to midwestern rural youth – and promoted these spiritual development programs. From group event planning to individual counseling, discernment was his greatest gift.

His colleagues and family valued his honesty, kindness, compassion, servant leadership, fun loving personality, mischievous spirit, and immense capacity to love. Dave’s work ethic in service to others was his daily devotion.
