SPRINGFIELD – Ray Smith, 66, of Springfield, died Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at his home.
He was born April 25, 1941 in Chatham, IL, the son of Ira and Nettie Goodin Smith, Sr. He married Janet DeFrates on January 10, 1975. His parents, four sisters, and one brother preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Highway Maintenance Department. He was a member of Calvary Temple Church. He was a United States Army veteran serving during 1958-1960. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, camping, and being outside.
Survivors: wife, Janet Smith of Springfield; two daughters, Kristy (husband, Allen) Moore of Florissant, MO and Pam Holmes of Dalton, GA; three sons, Phill (companion, Rick Tarr) Smith of Fort Meyers, FL, James (wife, Teresa) Smith of Rocky Face, GA, and RJ (companion, Deanna Rigsby) Smith, Jr. of Tampa, FL; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five sisters, Shari McElroy of Burnett, MO, Linda (husband, David) Kennedy of Jacksonville, Sue Sinclair of Alamogordo, NM, Doris Mills of Oakford, and Mary (husband, David) Frances Dinsmore of Mannsville, KY; and two brothers, Ronnie Smith of Middleton and Marshall (wife, Sue) Smith of Columbia, KY.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Temple Church, the American Cancer Society, or Memorial Medical Center Hospice Program.
Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, September 24, 2007 at Calvary Temple Church. Lie-in-State: 9:00-10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at Calvary Temple Church. Services: 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at Calvary Temple Church, Pastor Paul Rose officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery, where Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
