Porter J. Sowarsh
SPRINGFIELD – Porter J. Sowarsh, 85, of Springfield died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Regency.
He was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Montgomery County, the son of Rudolph and Roxie House Sowarsh. He married A. Elizabeth Betty Dunn on July 3, 1943.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, A. Elizabeth Betty Sowarsh of Springfield; several aunts and uncles; and several cousins.
He was a resident of Springfield since 1940.
After Brown’s Business College and before leaving for the service, Porter worked for Swift and Co. meat packing plant as a payroll clerk and bookkeeper. After returning from the Navy, he worked for American Berkshire Association for 31 years and he started as publisher of Berkshire News. He was appointed to assistant executive secretary and office manger and finally, treasurer. He worked for the state of Illinois Vehicle Services License Division for 18 years. He also worked at Bridge Jewelry Co. as a salesman and co-owned and operated Zesto Drive-in for several years.
He was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Elks Club 158, Knights of Columbus Council 364, past member of Sangamo Surf Club and a graduate of Waggoner High School class of 1940. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a petty officer second class, and for 39 months he was a recruiter.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 5 p.m.
Funeral mass will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. Peter Harman officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
