Paul E. Ford
Paul E. Ford, 67, of Springfield died Monday, December 12, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Home. He was born December 14, 1948 the son of Joseph E. Ford and Margaret L. Shontz Ford, both of whom predeceased him. He was also preceded by his sister Mary Margaret Ford.
He is survived by his sister Dorothy Ford, his wife Jane Ford and two sisters-in-laws, Nan Pervinich and Carol Helm. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families. Grateful for Erin Rachford (special friend) for comforting Paul at end of life.
He was educated locally, including Griffin High School, Springfield College in IL and IL College in Jacksonville. After graduation from college, he married the former Jane Pervinich on June 12, 1970, and referred to this as marrying his best friend. They were married more than 46 years. He entered the US Army in August 1970 and served mainly in the 1st Infantry Division. If anyone asked how long, Paul replied without hesitation: 1 year, 7 months, 5 days and 6 hours.
After military service, he `taught for a while, then used the GI Bill to get a degree in Human Development Counseling from Sangamon State University. He was hired by the State of IL Dept. of Rehabilitation where he stayed for more than 30 years, working as a Disability Claims Adjudicator. In May 2001 he was given the Social Security Administration’s Associate Commissioner’s Citation for his work at the Disability Determination Services. He retired in June 2008.
He was a voracious reader with interests ranging from archeology to zoology. Paul possessed a phenomenal vocabulary. He enjoyed playing pinochle and travelling to Alaska, the Caribbean, and Hawaii and Las Vegas. On the rarest of occasions, Paul would let slip a pun or two.
Visitation will be at Staab Funeral Home on Monday, December 19, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. There will be a prayer service at 5:00 p.m.
Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Dee Stern officiating.
