Michael Lee "Mike" Welch
Michael Lee “Mike” Welch, 73, of Chatham, died at 6:45 pm, Monday, June 26, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born August 18, 1943 in Springfield, to Charles B. and Helen Lee Welch. He married Joyce Blough on March 23, 1963 and she survives.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Elaine (Paul) Estes of Springfield, Elizabeth “Libbie” (Dave) Kaplan of St. Peters, MO and Erin (Paul) Gutzman of Chatham; six grandchildren, Abbie and Sam Kaplan, Michael and Mackenzie Estes, Grace and Emma Gutzman; one sister Mary Jo Welch of Springfield and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles “Bernie” Welch and niece, Michelle Welch.
Mike was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Chatham. He worked at CIPS and retired from the State of Illinois.
He was an avid hunter and was involved in many hunting organizations, including Ducks Unlimited, White Tails and Pheasants Forever. He was a member of AITP and held all officer positions on the National level. He also earned the lifetime membership at the National level. Mike was a member of Aqua Sports Club, Springfield Motor Boat Club and Lake Council of Clubs. He enjoyed his time as a Master Gardener and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a certified hunter and safety instructor and volunteered at the BB Range for DNR at Conservation World and was a member of Lefthander’s Gun Club. Mike will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and would always help those in need.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with a prayer service at 4 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Monday, July 3, 2017 at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Chatham with Fr. John Nolan officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
