Michael C. Upperman, III

October 1, 1992 - April 10, 2015

Michael C. Upperman, III, 22, of Springfield, died Friday, April 10, 2015 at his home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with Ocular Melanoma. He was born October 1, 1992 in Champaign, IL to Michael Upperman, Jr. and Kimberly (Hanney) Clark.

He is survived by his parents, Kim and Scott Clark of Springfield; two sisters, Courtney Upperman of Springfield and Nichole (Ryan) Strebing of Bloomington; one brother, Chad Clark of St. Louis, MO; grandparents, Bill and Barb Hanney of Ft. Myers, FL, Bob Clark of Springfield, Phyllis Quigley of Orlando, FL and Mike & Carolyn Upperman of Perrysville, IN; several aunts, uncles, cousins and his dog, Sophie. He was preceded in death by his grandma, Ada Clark and his beloved Nana.

Michael was a very involved member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was on a National Leadership Board and held various positions with Sigma Chi. He was chosen to attend the Leadership Academy at SEMO. His hobbies included hanging with his friends and fraternity brothers, target shooting and traveling abroad. By the age of 21 he had traveled to 9 countries.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 13, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with a memorial service at 4 pm, followed by a memorial gathering until 7 pm.

We enjoyed working with Michael here at Southeast MO State. As chair of Communication Studies, I met with Michael when he declared our major as a second major. I enjoyed the visit, and I was impressed by his sense of purpose and professionalism, coupled with a real genuineness. We will treasure the time we knew him, and the cards we've exchanged this past year. Our thoughts and prayers now go to his family and to his many friends. We wish them comfort and an ability to cope and to celebrate his life. We will honor Michael by the way we live ours.

Although we did not know Michael personally, we know how proud Scott and Kim were, by the stories that were shared. Our condolences go out to all the family and friends. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

I went to springfield high with Michael as well as went on the Germany trip with him in 2010. Michael was always the definition of kind and charismatic. I remember when in Germany we had this one day of travel that was really intense; back to back train station arrivals with only minutes to get off of one train and onto another. Michael and I stood next to each other on one particular train and as we approached our destination Michael turned to me and said, you run for the next train, and I'll get your bag. Such a small act of kindness that defined who Michael was, always thinking of others. He will be missed by everyone who knew him and my heartfelt condolences go out to all his family and closest friends. "Alles gute kommt von oben"
