Merle E. Killen
SPRINGFIELD – The Lord took Merle E. Killen’s hand and called him home at the age of 78 on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. from St. John’s Hospice.
Merle was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Springfield, the son of Roy and Grace Day Killen. He was formerly married to Wilma Killen, the mother of his children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Sunley, Ruth Blockyou and Rose Eileen Killen; and two brothers. Roy, Jr. and Larry Killen.
He is survived by two daughters, Cheryle (husband, Sam) Pruitt of Springfield and Cathy (husband, Mike) Teer of Sherman; two sons,
Ken (wife, Kay) Killen of Prattville, Ala., and Don (wife, Agnes) Killen of Pensacola, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Brian, Megan, Erin, Christy, Katy, Joey, Andy, Ashley, Amanda, Brett and Jessie; a stepgrandson, Barry; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Georgie Marcum of Springfield and Pearl Rowland of Chatham; two brothers, Ernest Killen and Loren (wife, Bonnie) Killen of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Merle was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He worked as a butcher at Constantino’s, then he worked and retired as a security guard from First National Bank.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He enjoyed working in his yard and liked growing tomatoes in his garden. He also enjoyed listening to his music, spending time with his grandkids and he loved fishing.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Ken Gennicks officiating.
Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
