Mary Elizabeth Stenger, 85, of Springfield, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2011 at St. John’s Hospice. She was born on August 4, 1926 in Belleville, IL the daughter of Aloysius and Aurelia Reis Stenger. She was a resident of Springfield since 1948. She worked as a social worker supervisor for Catholic Charities for 32 years and retired from St. John’s Hospital Social Services in 1989.
Miss Stenger was Social Worker of the year in 1979, a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Joseph’s Home Coterie, Samaritan at St. John’s Hospital, member of St. Vincent DePaul Society at Blessed Sacrament, active in many volunteer activities through the community including lector at Blessed Sacrament Church, Meals on Wheels and Caregivers. She received her Bachelor in Science Degree from St. Louis University in 1948, and Masters Degree in Social Work from St. Louis University in 1963.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara J. Rutherford and Margaret M. Stenger, one brother, Aloysius J. Stenger, two sisters-in-law, Marlene Stenger and Jo Ann Stenger and brother-in-law, Ken Rutherford.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph G. Stenger of Richmond, VA, ten nieces, two nephews and several cousins.
Visitation: 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jeff Grant officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
