Mary "Mary Kay" Kathryn Cullen
Mary Kathryn “Mary Kay” Cullen, 86, of Rochester died at St. John’s Hospice on May 8, 2014 from the effects of Dementia with Lewy Bodies.
She was born on November 3, 1927 in Springfield, the second child of Thomas Joseph Daley and Ella Christine (Schlitt) Daley. Mary Kay married Loren Matthew Cullen in 1950. He preceded her in death in 2002.
After graduating from St. Teresa High School in Decatur, she attended and graduated from St. John’s School of Nursing in 1948. She worked as an RN in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (EENT) Surgical Unit for many years, both full-and part-time while raising her family and serving as neighborhood nurse. In later years, she volunteered at St. Joseph Home. Mary Kay was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Parish in Springfield. She was a founding member of the Nurses Club now celebrating their 66th anniversary.
She is survived by her children Marygael Cullen (James M. Veselenak), Rochester; Daniel T. Cullen, Athens; William P. Cullen (Karen), Sarasota, Florida; Colleen A. Hagenbruch (Steve), Peoria; Christopher J. Cullen (Elizabeth Joan), Rochester; and Shawn M. Cullen (Tammy), Indiana; her siblings Sister Mary Gael Daley, OP, Springfield; Robert J. Daley, Palmetto, Florida; and Margaret Ellen Stahoviak (Ed), Grayslake.
She has 15 grandchildren: Brandon (Jennifer), Aaron, Laura and Adam Cullen; Devin Veselenak (Vanessa Fichtl); Jared (Lauren), Jordan, Jacob and Jonas Cullen; Megan and Cullen Hagenbruch; Matthew and Mary Frances Cullen; Sean Langa; and Abby Langa Johnson. She has 8 great-grandchildren including Logan, Aidan and Evan Cullen; Luisa Spiker and Yuna Fichtl; Brayden Cullen; Liam Langa; and Cody Johnson.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother William Daley; and granddaughter Anna Rose Cullen.
