Mary Martha "DeeDee" Amerson
Mary Martha “DeeDee” Amerson, 94, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Home. She was born on August 26, 1926, in Assumption, the daughter of Alphonse “AJ” and Mary Eleanor (Hardy) DeClerck. She married William A. Amerson in 1949 and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1991.
Also preceding her in death are her parents; one daughter, Marta Amerson; one grandson, Andrew Bartletti; and two brothers, Frank and George DeClerck.
Survivors include three children, William M. (Ellen) Amerson, Mary Beth (Michael) Bartletti and Mark D. (MB) Amerson, all of Springfield; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary graduated from Pana Township High School in 1944 and St. John’s School of Nursing in 1947. She was a nurse cadet in the United States Nurse Corps during World War II. She worked in the maternity department at St. John’s Hospital, King’s Daughters Home and for Dr. James Furrie.
She belonged to Oak Crest Country Club and was a nine hole champion. She was a longstanding member of St. Joseph’s Church.
Mary was a master gardner, maintaining several large gardens at her farm in Oconee and home in Springfield. She was the Den Mother of Bill and Mark’s Cub Scout Packs.
She volunteered for different organizations including: St. John’s Hospital with the Samaritans, Third Age Living with tax preparations and Catholic Charities.
Mary enjoyed living a frugal lifestyle, gardening, clipping “helpful” articles for her children and grandchildren, sewing, and spending time with her family. She was a proud product of the Great-Depression, growing up on a farm. Mary knew how to turn a penny into a nickel.
Visitation: 10 – 11 am, Friday, August 13, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Church.
Funeral Mass: 11 am, Friday, August 13, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Church with Reverend Manuel Cuizon officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Breadline.
