Mary J. Mcwilliams
SPRINGFIELD – Mary Judith Judy McWilliams, 68, of Springfield passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.
Judy was born Dec. 28, 1939, in Springfield, the daughter of George H. Mac McDowell and Mary Jane (Nelch) McDowell.
Judy graduated from Springfield High School. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her master’s in Nursing from Northern Illinois University. Judy was an oncology certified nurse specialist for more than 20 years and taught classes at St. John’s School of Nursing. She was the stem cell transplant co-coordinator from the inception of the program until her retirement. Judy specialized in pain control and assisted patients in their battles with cancer.
Judy is survived by a son, Mark and Laurie McWilliams and his children, Meghan and Paige McWilliams; daughter, Mary Beth and Chris Chiodini and her children, Kyle and Derek Lang; ex-husband, Don McWilliams, who has been a friend and supporter of Judy; brother, David and Ann McDowell of Athens, Ga.; and nephews; Sam and Andy.
The family wishes to gratefully recognize the comfort, love and efforts shared with them and given to Judy by the hospice staff at St. John’s, from Dr. John Holland’s gentle, calming influence to the nurses, volunteers and students, everyone was a gentle, caring, compassionate angel.
There will be a memorial gathering from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home with a celebration of her life at 6:30 p.m. with chaplain Marty Nagle.
