Mary Emma Sherer, 89, of Springfield, died at 1:03 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at St. John’s Hospital. She was born November 30, 1923 in Leanna Township in Logan, County, to Charles and Nellie Shreaves Turner. She married Paul Ramon Sherer and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1969.
Her parents; one brother, Roy Turner and two sisters, Lena Coe and Catherine Taft also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail Marie (Bob) Kruse of Allentown and Mary Alice Sherer of Springfield; one son, Michael Scott “Scotty” (Mary Katherine) Sherer of Peachtree City, GA; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Mary was a veteran, proudly serving with the US Navy Wave during WWII. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Girl Scout leader and a Den Mother for Boy Scouts. She was active with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Annis Club; AARP and VFW Post 10302 Auxiliary. Mary was a Homemaker.
Visitation: 4-6:30 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 6:30 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2013 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. John Hamilton officiating and Military Honors conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail.
Private burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Mary Sherer.
