Martin B. Oley Olsen
CHATHAM – The Rev. Martin B. Oley Olsen, 76, a resident of Chatham since 1981, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Mount Clemens, Mich., the son of Norman and Irene Burrier Olsen. He married Judy Zieseniss and later married Suzanne M. Young on Nov. 7, 1998. His parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Olsen was pastor at Chatham Presbyterian Church from 1981 to 1994, Bethel Presbyterian in Hamilton from 1971 to 1978 and various other churches during his 41 years of service. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1951 to 1953. He graduated from Texas A&M University and earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church and Chatham Kiwanis. He enjoyed playing bridge at the Senior Center in Springfield and also enjoyed horses. He was named Pastor Emeritus at Chatham Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Suzanne M. Olsen of Chatham; four sons, Douglas Olsen of Warsaw, David (wife, Pam) Olsen of Keokuk, Iowa, Richard (Pam) Olsen of Pekin and Donald Olsen of Austin, Texas; stepchildren, Mona Colburn of Springfield, Louise Hale of Springfield, Michael Colburn of Homewood and Winfield Colburn of Chatham; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home, with a lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at Chatham Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chatham Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Joe Eby officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
