Martha Ruth Gardner
Martha R. Gardner, 94 of Springfield died at 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. Martha was born June 22, 1921 in Ball Township, IL to Earl B. and Ellen M. Ferguson Crowder.
Martha graduated from Feitshans High School. She married Charles W. Gardner on July 17, 1948 and he preceded her in death on May 9, 1968. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her sister Beatrice E. Felber and brother Robert L. Crowder.
She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl S. (husband Michael) Antenan of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Martha retired from the city of Springfield as secretary to the Civil Service Commission in 1981. She served in this position during the administrations of Nelson Howarth, William Telford and the first administration of Mayor Mike Houston.
Martha was a member of the Capitol City American Business Womens Association. She was once elected “Woman of the Year”. She also was a member of the Breakfast Club Coffee Klutch.
Martha loved the outdoors. She loved planting flowers, mowing her grass and socializing with her neighbors and their children.
She enjoyed spending time on the weekends, shopping with her daughter Cheryl and going out to eat at different dining establishments. She was an avid NASCAR and St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Funeral Service: 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2015 Staab Funeral Home with Vaughn Beeman officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
