Martha D. Schmelz
SPRINGFIELD – Martha D. Schmelz, 86, of Springfield died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at St. John’s Hospice.
She was born March 8, 1922, in Versailles, the daughter of Taylor and Winifred Smith Spoonamore. She married Edward L. Schmelz on Dec. 24, 1942. He preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Schmelz; two brothers, Charles and Robert H. Spoonamore; and a sister, Shirley Jiardina.
Mrs. Schmelz, a resident of Springfield for most of her life, was employed in the cafeteria of Christ the King School for 30 years.
She was a member of Christ the King Church. She enjoyed ceramics and cake decorating and was a past den mother for Cub Scouts. She graduated from Lanphier High School.
Surviving are a son, Robert (wife, Janice) Schmelz of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a grandson, Kurt Schmelz of Madison, Wis.; two sisters, Betty Sellers of Chicago and Mary (husband, Duane) Theobald of Springfield; a brother, John (wife, Janet) Spoonamore of Memphis, Tenn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with prayers held there at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Christ the King Church with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
