Margaret Mary "Marge" O'Keefe
Margaret Mary (Marge) O’Keefe, 90, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017. Marge was born June 29, 1926 in Clinton, Iowa to William Henry Calnan, Jr. and Pauline A (Adams) Calnan. She attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She was also a member of the WWII US Cadet Nurse Corp for four years.
After graduation she worked as a nurse at the Mayo Clinic. While in Minnesota she met her future husband, Robert Emmett O’Keefe, Sr. who was attending St. Mary’s College in Winona Minnesota. They were wed on June 10, 1950 in Clinton, IA and remained wed for 64 years until his death in 2015. They moved to Palo Alto, California while Bob received his Masters’ Degree from Stanford University. After returning from California, they lived around Tampico and Long Point, Illinois until they relocated to Springfield in 1961. Marge had a highly successful career beginning as a nurse, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing Services at Rutledge Manor and The Regency.
Marge enjoyed being surrounded by her family. Besides her successful career in nursing, she truly excelled at being a Mom. She advanced that career becoming a Grandmother and finally a Great-grandmother. These represented her greatest passion. She also enjoyed a good book with a martini in the evening.
She is survived by her four sons, Robert E. O’Keefe, Jr. of Springfield, Dr. Timothy (Donna) O’Keefe of Joplin, MO, Drs. John (Cindy) O’Keefe of Springfield, Daniel (Lynn) O’Keefe of St. Louis, MO; one daughter, Ellen (Geoff) Andres of Springfield; ten granddaughters; five grandsons and three great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E O’Keefe, Sr., one grandson, Robert E. O’Keefe III, her daughter, Dr. Colleen M. O’Keefe, and one brother William Henry Calnan, III.
Visitation: 1:30-4:30 pm, Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with a prayer service at 1:30 pm.
Funeral Mass: 11 am Monday, February 6, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Scott Thelander SJC officiating. Graveside services immediately following at Calvary Cemetery.
