Margaret Ann Gramlich
Margaret Ann Gramlich, 76, of Springfield, IL passed away Wednesday, August 22, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Born in Springfield, IL on May 10, 1936, she was the daughter of Margaret and Fred Gramlich. Her parents and beloved pet “Coco” preceded her in death. She is survived by many close friends at the Illinois Department of Revenue, several dedicated neighbors her nieces, Lisa King, Sherri Miller and Helena Gramlich; many cousins and her dog, Phoenix.
Margaret Ann was a very dedicated daughter, and a friend to many. Margaret Ann was a devout Catholic and graduate of St. Peter and Paul grade school and Feitshans High School, where she was a cheerleader.
Margaret Ann truly loved the north end of Springfield, and dedicated her personal life to supporting and improving it. She was very active in the North End Improvement Association, of which she served as president for many years. During her presidency, she was very successful at bringing the concerns of the north end to the attention of local authorities/politicians, and was instrumental in bringing business, construction projects, traffic and police protection improvements to the area. She also participated and/or coordinated the annual “National Night Out” for the north end of Springfield, for over 20 years, and was a big supporter of Ridgely elementary school and several charities. She had a great love for animals and was a supporter of APL.
Margaret Ann’s other passions were State and local politics. She was active in local politics for most of her life, serving as a precinct committee person and working on many political campaigns, often working late into the evening in support of her candidates. She had many friends on both sides of the political aisle.
Margaret Ann had a long career with the State of Illinois spanning over 40 years, starting as a Licensing Inspector at the Department of Professional Regulation in 1970. She then transferred to the Department of Professional Regulation, where she remained until 1989 when she was promoted to a position at the Department of Revenue. After a brief break in service, she returned to Revenue where she worked from 1993 until she retired on June 30, 2012. For many years she was also a beautician. She was quite a lady and will be sorely missed by many.
