Louise M. Gietl
SPRINGFIELD – Sister Louise Gietl, OSU, 91, of Springfield died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at 10:02 p.m. at the Ursuline Convent in Alton. She was born on March 8, 1917, in Springfield to Emil and Anna Hanke Gietl Sr.
Sister entered the Ursuline Sisters on July 19, 1936, and made her first professions on Jan. 20, 1939.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and five brothers.
She is survived by a sister, Helen Gietl Huelsman, and a brother, William Gietl, both of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sister Louise was a teacher for more than 27 years at several schools, including Blessed Sacrament and St. Aloysius in Springfield, St. Bernard’s in Wood River, St. Peter’s in Kirkwood, Mo., Sacred Heart in Festus, Mo., and St. Ambrose in Godfrey. She introduced her fourth-graders to the Love Bug Club, which kept in touch with needy persons in the parish. She also privately tutored many area children.
She graduated from Ursuline Academy in Springfield and received her Bachelor’s of Science from Fontbonne in St. Louis and her Masters of Science in Education from DePaul University in Chicago.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Blessed Sacrament Church. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Meehling officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
