Louis J. "Jake" Hinds
Louis G. “Jake” Hinds, 90, died at 6:45 am on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Memorial Medical Center with his family at his side. Jake was born October 8, 1924 in Springfield, the son of Louis Hinds and Nina Hunt. He married Betty Arnold on December 2, 1945. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Clara Bollinger and Betsy Britz.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; Daughter, Sue (Bob) Esposito and one son; five grandchildren including Michael Beckman and four great grandchildren including Nolan Beckman and many nieces and nephews.
He was the owner and operator of Hinds Wrecking and Hinds Tavern in Salisbury for forty-five years.
He was proud of serving in the US Army and was a WWII veteran doing a tour of duty in Europe with the 82nd Armored Medical Battalion 12th armored division “Hellcats”. He was also a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was an avid deer hunter, spending many years hunting in Colorado. He also loved to gamble on Keno and the Lottery.
While owing Hinds Tavern on Sunday’s you could find him at the round table with a friendly pinochle card game.
After retiring he spent his later years with his great grandson, Nolan.
Jake loved to watch tennis, but never played.
Visitation: 4 – 7 pm, Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Friday, February 27, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Jerry Brownlee officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
Jake will be missed by his loving family and friends. We will love him forever.
