Lorraine Veneta Gillespie
SPRINGFIELD – Lorraine Veneta Gillespie, 85, of Springfield died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
She was born Aug. 1, 1923, in Divernon, the daughter of Owen and Veneta Lard Squires. She married Richard T. Gillespie on Aug. 17, 1946; he preceded her in death in 1981.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary in 1949; a son, Michael in 2003; and her parents.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Kohlrus of Springfield and Carol (Kevin) Forestier of Rochester; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Gillespie of Springfield; two sons,
Tom (Irene) Gillespie of Springfield and Tim (Jennie Painter) Gillespie of Orange, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Rose Gillespie of Washington, Pa.; special family friend, Ada Wofford of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lorraine worked for Army Corps of Engineers, was an executive secretary for former Lt. governor, Paul Simon and former attorney general/Lt. governor, Neil Hardigan and former attorney general, Roland Burris and members of the Illinois House and Senate.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, UCT, SPARC, RSEA, Caregivers, St. Louise deMarillac, ALPHA IOTA, Mu Gamma and Red Hat Society.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with prayer services beginning at 4 p.m.
Lorraine’s body will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. David Hoefler officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
