Lillian R. Sgambelluri
SPRINGFIELD, IL – Lillian R. (née: Kolas) Sgambelluri, 85, of Springfield, died peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Concordia Village surrounded by the love of God, family, and all those who cared for her. A daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, Lillian was born May 5, 1930 in East Chicago, IN to Ignac and Filomena Klisys Kolas. She married Vito J. Sgambelluri May 24, 1952, and together the two raised three children.
Lillian had lived in Springfield since 1997, when she and Vito moved to be near children and grandchildren. She was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and was very much involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Prior to her time in Springfield, Lillian had lived in Merrillville, Indiana for 34 years, where she raised their family. She was certified to teach Christian doctrine by the Diocese of Gary and taught children at her parish for many years. She was actively involved as a school volunteer, a choir member and a member of the Rosary Sodality of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Lillian was a deeply spiritual woman, a loving wife and mother, and an unfailingly generous friend in her community at Concordia. A gifted floral designer, she created dozens of arrangements for family and friends, always with the hope of brightening the days of those around her. She cared deeply about all of God’s creation, and loved caring for her own pets over the years and for the birds that flocked to the courtyard at Concordia whenever she filled their birdfeeders.
Surviving are her husband, Vito, of Springfield; a daughter, Susan Sgambelluri of Bloomington, IN; two sons, Robert (Janice) Sgambelluri of Springfield and Thomas (Joyce Steigerwaldt) Sgambelluri of El Cajon, CA; three grandchildren, R. Michael, Philip and Lauren Sgambelluri; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, both here and in Lithuania.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by two half brothers, John and Peter Kolas.
