Lewis Edward Melcher
Lewis Edward Melcher, 85, of Denver CO, formerly of Springfield, died at 4:26 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at his home. He was born on February 23, 1929, in Springfield to the late Edward Wesley and Evelyn Watkins Melcher. He is also preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Melcher Magee, Kathryn Melcher Christiansen and Alice Isabel Melcher Boehner and one brother, George Melcher.
Mr. Melcher is survived by a niece, Rebbecca (James) Stealey of Villa Ridge, MO and a nephew, Paul Christiansen of Pekin.
He proudly served his country for three years in the US Army as a Sargent 1st Class during the Korean War. He belonged to Merritt United Methodist Church. Lewis worked at Swift and Co., both in Chicago and St. Louis, he then worked a very short time for Ford Motor Co in St. Louis. He started in the garment industry with Oberman Manufacturing. Co., who was bought out by Levi, Strauss and Co., where he worked for over 30 years. On March 1, 1991 he retired from Levi Strauss and Company as a Manager in charge of the Engineering Department for the jeans division mainly in the San Francisco area.
Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Staab Funeral Home, with Reverend Margaret Jessup officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
