Lester "Butch" Hammond, Jr.
Lester “Butch” Hammond, Jr., 69, of Springfield, passed away at 9:57pm, Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born on September 23, 1948 in Springfield to Lester Hammond, Sr. and Lois Hanauer. He married Linda Harbour on September 14, 1968 and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael T. (Debbie) Hammond of Chatham and Scott H. Hammond of Springfield; two grandchildren, Kelsie and Chase Hammond; one brother, Kent (Cheryl) Hammond, Sr. of Springfield; two brothers-in-law, Mike and John Harbour of Springfield; two sisters-in-law, Janet Hammond of Springfield and Lou Ann Way of Texas, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary Hammond.
Lester was a graduate of Lanphier High School in 1966 and was a member of the Painter’s Union Local #90. He worked for Springfield District 186 and for the Illinois Department of Corrections.
He was an avid Cubs and Duke University fan. He was a coach, manager and district administrator for Cy Young Little League for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his dogs, traveling and visiting casinos.
Visitation: 10 am – 12 pm, Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 South 5th St., Springfield, IL.
Funeral Service: 12 pm, Saturday July 21, 2018 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Pastor Sandra Woodard officiating. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or directed to the family for the grandchildren’s college education fund.
