Leonard "Len" Fleckenstein
Leonard Leroy Fleckenstein, 88, of Springfield, IL, passed away at Memorial Medical Center on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. He was born August 17, 1923 to Roy and Nella Hemrich Fleckenstein. Len graduated from St. Theresa High School and enlisted in the U. S. Army on May 14, 1943. He proudly served in the South Pacific attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He married Mary Elizabeth Munster on June 1, 1946. Mr. Fleckenstein was an office machine repair technician with Underwood Corp., he later worked for Olivetti Underwood Corp. and eventually formed a partnership with Gietl Office Equipment. He later retired form Royal Office Equipment at age 80. He loved traveling, reading, and was an accomplished guitarist. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Thomas, Rebecca, Timothy (wife, Teri), and Jennifer (partner, Linda Sherwood); four grandchildren, Nathan and Jacob Meeks of Springfield, Gregory and Ryan Fleckenstein of Springfield; three great grandchildren, Tanner, Keegan and Peyton Meeks all of Springfield. He is also survived by six siblings, Mary Yakey of Antigo, WI, Millie Zimmerman of Springfield, Sister Mary Agnes Fleckenstein, O.S.F. and Sister Marcelita Fleckenstein, O.S.F. both of Campbellsport, WI, Paul Fleckenstein of Decatur, IL and Tony Fleckenstein of Somerfield, Fl. He is preceded in death by his brother Herb Fleckenstein of Howell, NJ in May 2011.
Visitation: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Funeral Mass: 11:30 a.m. Monday March 5, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Church with Reverend Jeff Grant.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Animal Protective League or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Springfield, IL.
