Lee F. Hurshman
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Lee F. Hurshman, 67, of Springfield, died peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice after a courageous eight year battle with cancer.
He was born March 14, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Alvin and Eleanor Hurshman. He married Jane Ellen Schneider on June 27, 1964 in Euclid, Ohio.
Dr. Hurshman received a Bachelor of Science Degree, graduating magna cum laude, from Western Reserve University in 1965. He later earned a Doctor of Medicine, cum lade, from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1968. From 1968 to 1971 he completed his residency at Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He served as a physician in the United States Army at Fort Lee, Virginia from 1971 to 1973.
Dr. Hurshman came to Springfield with his family in 1973 to practice pediatric medicine, which he continued for 31 years. During this time, he was on staff with St. John’s Hospital and Memorial Medical Center, serving on multiple hospital committees. He was chairman of the department of pediatrics at Memorial Medical Center for four years. In his early years of practice, he served as a consultant to Hope School, Lincoln Developmental Center, and the Children’s Psychiatric Hospital at the University of Michigan. He was a partner with the Springfield Clinic in later years.
He belonged to many organizations, including the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Sangamon Medical Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, Lake Michigan Single Handed Sailing Society, Great Lakes Cruising Club, Waterfront Yacht Club in St. Joseph Michigan, the National Rifle Assn., and Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane; two sons, David Hurshman (wife, Cheryl) of Maryville, IL and Eric Hurshman (wife, Gwynn) of Scarsdale, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Meredith and Elizabeth; his brother, John Hurshman; his mother; and several cousins.
His family welcomes friends and colleagues from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. A concelebrated funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Church of the Little Flower, with Rev. Chuck Edwards and Rev. Monsignor John Ossola officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Miracle Network at St. John’s Hospital and St. John’s Hospice.
