Lee E. "Gene" Helms
Lee E. “Gene” Helms, 93, of Springfield, died at 11 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2014, at St. John’s Hospice. He was born July 5, 1920 in Tallula, Illinois to William Matthew and Ethel Mae McGlassen Helms. He married Helen Lee Bramlet in 1944 and she preceded him in death on July 22, 1989.
Lee is survived by a daughter, Judy (Jack) Shupenus of Petersburg; a son, Greg (Debbie) Helms of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Helms of Springfield; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Shaudis of Bakersfield, CA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, W. Matt Helms and several brothers and sisters.
Gene was a US Army veteran serving during WWII. He was a letter carrier and retired in 1985. He was a die-hard Cubs fan and formerly enjoyed golfing.
Visitation: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at Staab Funeral Home.
Graveside Service: 1 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where Sangamon County Inter-Veterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to ALS or the Illinois Presbyterian Home in Springfield.
