LaVonne E. Evans

September 21, 1912 - January 24, 2010

SPRINGFIELD – LaVonne E. Evans of Springfield, IL passed away on January 24, 2010 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village at the age of 97. She was born September 21, 1912 in Dodge County, Minnesota, the daughter of Edward Emholtz and Jessie Campbell Emholtz. She married Thomas R. Evans in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1974 as did an infant brother and sister.

At age 18 LaVonne began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Southern Minnesota. She was active in the Early Childhood Education Association and taught 10 years in the St. Paul, MN school system. After moving to Springfield, IL she received her teacher’s degree from Illinois State University. LaVonne taught for more than 20 years in the Rochester School District where she developed the first kindergarten program.

She was a member of Alpha Chapter Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority, a life member of the Illinois Teachers Association, past Worthy Matron of Abraham Lincoln Order of Eastern Star, Sgt. Caleb Hopkins Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, a charter member of the Illinois Genealogical Society and a volunteer for Memorial Medical Center for 14 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

LaVonne is survived by a son, Dr. G. Edward Evans of Flagstaff, AZ; twin daughters, Julie (Vern) Jared of Miami, FL and Judy (Jack) Gooding of Springfield, IL. There are 4 grandchildren JoLynn (Keith) Crain of Sherman, Jay (Kim) Gooding of Springfield, Thomas (Terry) Evans of St. Paul, MN and Jana Jared of Miami, FL. There are also 3 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great-grandson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral service at 11 am Friday, January 29, 2010 at Staab Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association or Macular Degeneration Research at 22512 Gateway Center Dr., Clarksburg, MD 20871.
