SPRINGFIELD – Josephine F. Madonia, 88, a lifelong resident of Springfield, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at St. John’s Hospice.

She was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Springfield, the daughter of Sam and Grace Leone Madonia. Her parents; three brothers, Tony, Joseph Peno and Sevet; and two sisters, Rose Madonia and Ann Madonia Fox, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Madonia was an assembler at Sangamo Electric Co. for 37 years and also worked for the Springfield Police Department.

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society, Sangamo Retirees and AARP. She was an active member of her neighborhood, an excellent cook – known for her homemade pizzas on Christmas Eve and her special turkey dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas – and an immaculate housekeeper. She was a loving caregiver whose greatest joy was caring for others, giving generously of her time and financial aid when needed. Her family and church were of utmost importance to her.

She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She will be forever in our hearts. We will never forget her.

Surviving are her devoted sisters, Agnes Hill of Springfield, Mary O’Donnell (husband, H.C.) of Escondido, Calif., Grace (husband, Charles J.) Garbin of Springfield and Nancy (husband, Pat) Ryan of Springfield; her wonderful brother, Jasper (wife, Rachel) Madonia of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-nieces and -nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at St. Joseph’s Church, with Monsignor Thomas Holinga officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s School or St. John’s Hospice.
