Joseph R. Sullivan
SPRINGFIELD – Joseph R. Joe Sullivan, 86, of Springfield died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Springfield, the son of Michael James and Margaret Rose Quigley Sullivan. He married Helen F. Staab in January 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Molly Sullivan; two brothers, Tim and Paul Sullivan; and four sisters, Mary Margaret Henn, Sr. Rose Margaret O.P., Helen LaBonte and Catherine Ryan.
Mr. Sullivan, a lifelong resident of Springfield, worked at Sangamo Electric. Mr. Sullivan was general manager at Crown Transit Lines and retired from Crown Travel and Tours as president. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Knights of Columbus Council 365. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Helen F. Sullivan of Springfield; two daughters, Mary Cullen of Springfield and Julie Sullivan of California; four sons, Richard (Karen) Sullivan of Utah, and Michael, Gregory (Joann) and Joseph Sullivan, all of Springfield; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Eimer and Margaret Sheehan, both of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2009, at Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. David Hoefler officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
