Joseph A. Zanders, 91, passed away Thursday, November 20 at St. John’s Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Springfield. For the past three years he enjoyed living in Hickory Glen Retirement Community, a close-knit, loving apartment complex where he made many friends.

Joe was born July 23, 1917 in Springfield, IL, a son of Anthony John Zanders and Mary Agnes Power Zanders. He married Elora Hendricks in 1940 and they enjoyed 63 years of happiness together. She passed away in 2005. They have two daughters, Marilyn Jo Stalets, husband Joe, of Pana and Eileen Marie Morris, husband Mike, of Lincoln. They also have twin granddaughters Stacey Morris, of Joliet, IL and Camille Morris of Seattle, WA. In addition, he is survived by a brother, Theodore Zanders, wife Doris, of Midway, UT, a sister Louise Wagner of Feeding Hills, MA, several cousins, and many nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sisters, Clara Lord, Marie Govern and Marguerite Thompson.

Joe was a meat cutter by trade, first at Castor’s and then 23 years with A & P, the last 10 years as department manager in Petersburg, IL. After retiring from A & P, he worked for the Springfield Water Department for 5 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 to 1945.

Joe treasured his Irish heritage and was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice. He especially enjoyed singing Irish songs for family and friends. He also had a great sense of humor and was a master punster and loved to read and write poetry. In his long and happy life he was well loved by all his family and friends and will be truly missed.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Staab Funeral Home with prayers at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 24, 2008 at St. Agnes Church with Reverend Robert Jallas officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be provided.
