John W. Harbauer
John W. Harbauer, 88, of Springfield, died at 10:50 pm, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born February 3, 1924 in Springfield, to Carl and Myrtle Myers Harbauer. He married Rita H. Rechner in 1944 and she preceded him in death on March 11, 1991. His parents; one sister, Betty June and one brother, Carl Edward also preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Judi (Donald) Stowers of Chatham and Lyn Glover of Mission Viejo, CA; one son, John L. (Vicki) Harbauer of Springfield; three grandchildren, Eric Harbauer, Curt Stowers and Scott Stowers; four great grandchildren; one brother, C. Edward Harbauer of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was a WWII U.S. Army Air Force combat Veteran, serving from January 1943 to September 1945. He was a Top Turret Gunner with the 398th Bomb Squadron stationed in England. He was a member of Church of the Little Flower; IBEW Local #51, K of C; Springfield Motor Boat Club; Illini Bass Anglers; and Lucky Investment Club. He worked for CILCO for 37 years and retired in 1985 as Operations Manager for the Springfield area.
Visitation: 4-7 pm, Friday, July 6, 2012 at Staab Funeral Home with prayer service at 4 p.m.
Lie-in-State: 9-10 am, Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Church of the Little Flower.
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Saturday, July 8, 2012 at Church of the Little Flower with Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, where Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
