John Preston Burris
SPRINGFIELD – John Preston Burris Jr., 86, of Springfield, died at 12:58 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born May 7, 1923, in Springfield, the son of John Preston and Eva Stark Burris Sr.
He married Mary Lou Held on February 28, 1948. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and 10 sisters.
Mr. Burris was a supervisor for the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. for over 30 years.
He was an U. S. Marine Corps veteran serving during WWII. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, past president of the Elks and past police commissioner in Chatham. He was very involved in boys baseball, including the Connie Mac League, and took three teams to the World Series. He was a Golden Gloves boxer.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Burris of Springfield; four children, Mark (Clare) Burris of Glenarm, Karen Thompson of Arizona, Kevin (Karrie) Burris of Muskego, WI, and Shalawn (Ted) Grabner of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Snyder of Girard; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until time of services at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Thomas B. Christell Jr. and Pastor Juli Lehman-Guy officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2009, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military services will be conducted.
