John M. Hermes
SPRINGFIELD – John M. Hermes, 65, of Springfield died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at St. John’s Hospice.
He was born October 15, 1943, in Springfield, the son of George M. and Alberta Gillock Hermes. He married Gloria J. Aper on July 22, 1967.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria J. Hermes of Springfield; a daughter, Christina (husband, Mark) Stephenson of Mount Sterling; two sons, Craig (wife, Sharon) Geberin of Kenton, Ohio, and Kevin (wife, Angela) Hermes of Chatham; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Jean (husband, Guy) Jones of Springfield and Janice (husband, Carlo) Catalano of Springfield; a brother, Chuck (wife, Becky) Hermes of Dawson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Jo (husband, Doc) Williams.
John was a resident of Springfield for most of his life. He was a highway maintainer with the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, retiring in 2002.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1961 to 1963. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a past member and past leader of South Fork Dance Group. He enjoyed fifth wheel camping and being a snow bird in Texas.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home, with Matt Martin officiating.
Burial will be at Fancy Creek Cemetery.
